The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is calling for Canadian scientists to propose research on new treatments for MS, after a high-profile study in Italy suggested the disease is not an autoimmune condition, but a vascular disease.
Dr. Paolo Zamboni at the University of Ferrara has reportedly alleviated symptoms of people living with MS by removing blockages in veins that carry blood to and from the brain.
“These early results are encouraging and show that this warrants more study,” said Yves Savoie, MS Society President and CEO in a statement released Monday. “This is truly a new avenue to explore in MS research, and we want to be a part of furthering this investigation.”
The application deadline for the grants is January 22, 2010.
